Barnstable Planning Board clears path for Hyannis Six Points roundabout
BARNSTABLE — June 8, 2026 — Barnstable Planning Board unanimously recommends road alteration to enable a roundabout at Hyannis's Six Points intersection. The board voted 7-0 Monday to recommend that Town Council approve a right-of-way alteration along South Street and Old Colony Road — and accept an easement from the Barnstable Housing Authority — needed to construct a small roundabout at the notoriously complex six-point junction near the waterfront. Planning and Development Director Jim Kupfer said the Great Streets project is out for bids, with mobilization targeted for this fall or early spring and a completion window of summer 2028 at the latest. The plan preserves Aselton Park entirely, eliminates one unsafe entry point to reduce the intersection from six legs to five, and adds an eight-to-10-foot shared-use path along Old Colony from the Hyannis Transportation Center to the harbor, funded through a Complete Streets grant. A letter from Councilor Felicia Penn and Joseph Hoffman urging attention to pedestrian access was entered into the record and addressed during the presentation.
